flowers bring joy
Turns Out, Flowers Really Do Make us Happy
By Carrie Riker, OWNEr, Bloom & Gather Floral Design

Over the years, I’ve come across plenty of studies about the positive effects flowers have on our mood and overall well-being. Researchers have found that fresh flowers can reduce stress, increase feelings of happiness, and even improve emotional health. Some studies have even suggested that flowers can help boost our “happy hormones.” Honestly, I’ve never found those findings surprising.
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that flowers have a wonderful way of making people smile.”

The Joy Flowers Bring
I’ve delivered flowers to people who have just lost a loved one and have seen a little spark of joy return during an incredibly difficult time. The flowers didn’t take away the sadness, but they served as a reminder that someone was thinking of them and supporting them when they needed it most.
I’ve also had the privilege of watching a bride walk into her reception space for the first time and light up as she takes it all in. After months of planning and dreaming, there’s a moment when she sees the room transformed and everything comes together. The flowers become part of that experience, helping create a space that feels beautiful, magical and welcoming. Just what she imagined for one of the most meaningful days of her life.
I’ve decorated for baby showers and watched guests arrive, immediately drawn to the centerpieces and tablescapes. They start noticing the tiny details, admiring the colors, and taking photos before the celebration has even begun. There’s something special about seeing people come together to celebrate. The flowers become part of the experience, helping create an atmosphere that feels welcoming, joyful, and full of anticipation.

Beautiful Flowers Matter
I think beauty matters more than we sometimes give it credit for.
Long before anyone studied the effects of flowers on happiness, people instinctively turned to flowers for celebration, comfort, and connection. Flowers have been part of our most meaningful moments for generations, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
The science is fascinating, but I think most of us have experienced it firsthand.

The Joy of Noticing
Maybe that’s why flowers continue to mean so much to us. Not because they’re extravagant or necessary, but because they have a way of reminding us to slow down and notice the beauty that’s already around us.Maybe that’s why flowers continue to mean so much to us. For something so simple, flowers have a remarkable way of bringing a little more joy into our lives.
